still pathetically ill

I finally left the house... to go see my esteemed physician, Dr. Stephanie Scott. It has been my only outing of the week.

Dr. Scott thinks that since my gastro distress has gone on so long, it's not food poisoning, but instead a stomach flu. I'm kind of skeptical, because I think that in general, when digestive disorders come out of the blue so violently, it's food poisoning. In any event, Dr. Scott wrote me some prescriptions, advised me to try hard to eat, and filled me in that "the BRAT diet" has been completely discredited. (As a mother, I've had it beaten in to me over the years, "BRAT, BRAT, BRAT" [bananas, rice, applesauce, toast], but Dr. Scott says there's no evidence whatsoever for its efficacy).

One might have expected that after getting the drugs, I would have been on the mend, but no. I was up in the middle of the night horking my guts out again, and today I've been miserable. I'm consumed with an unending thirst, and I can't get enough ginger ale.

The newest wrinkle in this is that Iris Uber Alles's best friend is flying in for the weekend from Chicago (how cosmpolitan these urban children are). I hesitate to expose her to this, if it is a flu(although the rest of the family remains perfectly healthy). Anton's thought was to get me a hotel room to store me in. Pathetically enough I feel too miserable to enjoy that thought. If only I were healthier, how heavenly it would be to leave the husband with all the little children and instead stretch out in a hotel bed, perhaps calling for room service or pawing through the minibar. The sad reality is that I'd have no one to fetch me more ginger ale and listen to my whining.

sorry you are feeling so bad. wish i was there with you. we could lie on bed together and commiserate about how icky we feel. we would watch TV or rent our favorite movies and make snarky comments. we would discuss what, if any, foods we'd like to eat and make the SH go get them.

We're still healthy here! I am SO sorry you feel so awful. I wish I had knowledge or wisdom to relate. "This too shall pass" is probably NOT a comfort right now since you're living proof...

When I'm in your situation I always say, "well, this sucks, but my pants are a wee bit looser." Then I strategize how I can maintain my unexpected weight loss or even use it as a jump start to greater weight loss. Of course, it never works. Within days I've gained it all back because I can't stop from indulging all my minor food fantasies.

Still I do like to reach down and notice that my pants are loose, even if I do feel poorly.

Sorry to hear that you're still ailing. :-( Get well soon.

BRAT discredited? That's news to me, too. I'd love to see the article in Lancet or The New England Journal of Medicine that poked a hole in that one. I'm sure it would merit an Ig Nobel prize.

It's also been disproven that sugar causes hyperactivity and that dairy is bad for you when congested, and yet sugar makes me hyper and I can't eat yogurt when congested. So I don't believe everything doctors say.

Yikes, you'd think they could do more for you...especially since it's been going on so long. Sorry you feel terrible! Hope it passes soon!!

I hate the BRAT diet :)

I hope you are feeling better sooner rather than later, as it's been late enough that you've been suffering.

I can't say that I love the BRAT diet either, but I can say that either milk or pizza on the freshly ill stomach will cause a regrettable reaction.

I love the idea of being in a hotel room and think you should take SH up on it.

He wouldn't suggest it if he weren't serious, would he?

go get a room at the triton. i was once given the carlos santana suite yet only paid for one of their considerably smaller 'shoebox' rooms. i felt great when i was there - it's worth a shot!
