tinfoil hats and grassy knolls in the future?

Ten year-old Iris uber Alles announced importantly, "I had an ephiphany! The moon landing was obviously a fake!"

"Oh, Iris," I said.

"Hey! It is soooo obviously a fake! There is no way they could have filmed it!" After years of being told by her parents that when they were young, there were no personal computers, internet, DVDs, or video cameras; Iris was under the belief that there couldn't have been a way to film those portentous first steps on the moon.

Iris pulled up some footage of the moon landing online. "Where was the camera?" she jeered. "This is so obviously a fake! Was the camera just waiting on the moon?"

"Iris, you think they could have made a spaceship, made spacesuits that circulated air, and managed to get them up to the moon and back in one piece but they weren't capable of making a camera? They made movies back then, you know!"

She refused to buy this line of reasoning. "It's so clearly a fake, Momdude. Only an idiot would believe in the moon landing."

wait until she finds all the conspiracy sites validating her "epiphany".

Has she been to El Centro, California without you knowing it? Our car broke down there once and the husband commented that people who didn't believe in the moon landing MUST believe it had been filmed in El Centro. I could not disagree with him.

I have to say this, but she sounds just like my brother-in-law, Paul.

That should be, I hate to say this....

She'd better not develop a fascination with whale sound recordings, Marketeer...

Might be time for a lesson about proving negatives.

does this epiphany, mean that I was never born?

My birthdate is july 21, 1969 and when I was younger, I always found the date on the calendar from my uncle's dry cleaning business, by the iconic notation of the moon landing.

- dag (who apparently is also a hoax)

Could just be me but from what she said I thought she was referring to the fact that the camera watched him opening the door for supposedly the first time and everything - it was on a deployable arm of the ship thingy. Sounded like she wanted to know how the camera got there. :P

No, that doesn't cover it, Emma-Louise. She just plain thinks it was faked footage.... I explained that film equipment existed then and pointed out how it could be carried and used, but she is adamant that it appears too fake to be believable, and she's just skeptical about the technology existing back then. i think all the talk grownups have about "in our day, there was no internet/text messages/fax machines/iPods/cell phones/ad nauseam" has had such an impact on her that she thinks we were squatting in the mud poking at stones with sticks.

In that case I'm surprised that such a clever girl has fallen in with the tinfoil hat crew :P
I actually live in the town in Australia where they had the massive satellite dish that received the telemetry of the moon walk, and I've been inside the dish and have seen all the neat equipment they were using. Outdated and oversized, yes - incapable, certainly not.
They have 'the dish' set up as a tourist destination with a small hands-on museum and a cafe that sells knockout homemade lamb and red wine pies.
They also have branded cups and things, if Lola wanted to add a foreign cousin to what is left of the Cupy family. (Although I don't know your stance on receiving actual junk mail. I'd be hesitant, myself, my house has enough garbage as it is.)

you people do not understand. the moon landing is so so so so so so so so sooooooooooo fake. i understand they had cameras and stuff, and that's how they filmed it in a filming studio on earth. who was the camera man on the moon???

Hello Iris!
That's what I thought you meant!

It was telecast live from the side using a television camera attached to the cargo pallet on the side of the lunar module. When the pallet was opened, the camera deployed and was remotely operated.

I've seen photos of the lunar module with the camera out and replicas of all the equipment, and even got to play with it all. Very cool stuff.
